The German Grenade (Stielhandgranate)
The German stick grenade is basically a handle with an explosive charge at top of it. This made it easier to throw further and more accurately. To make it more deadly they could slide a metal sleeve over the charge at the top which made more shrapnel. A nick name for the German grenade was the potato masher. To detonate, you unscrewed the bottom cap where a string with a porcelain ball was attached, pull the string and throw.
